PE

Intent:-

At Woodvale, our vision is 'everyone thriving' and our Physical Education curriculum aims to foster our three curriculum drivers: developing oracy, embracing cultural richness, and nurturing social intelligence. At the heart of our approach is a belief that physical education is not simply about sport; our intent for PE is that children will:-

  • develop competence and confidence across a broad range of physical activities
  • acquire and apply fundamental movement skills that provide a foundation for lifelong participation in physical activity
  • develop resilience, determination and a positive attitude towards challenge and competition
  • understand how physical activity contributes to both physical and mental wellbeing
  • learn to work collaboratively, respectfully and fairly with others
  • develop the knowledge and skills needed to lead healthy, active lifestyles

Oracy is a fundamental driver in our curriculum. Through PE, children are encouraged to communicate effectively with teammates, discuss tactics and strategies, evaluate performance and provide constructive feedback. Lessons provide opportunities for pupils to explain their thinking, reflect on their own performance and use increasingly sophisticated sporting vocabulary. Through discussion and reflection, children develop confidence in expressing themselves whilst enhancing their understanding of physical activity.

Cultural Richness is another of our curriculum drivers. We believe that PE provides opportunities to explore a wide variety of sports, activities and traditions from different cultures and communities. Through dance, games and sporting activities, children gain an appreciation of the diversity that exists within sport and physical activity. We seek to broaden pupils' experiences and inspire them through exposure to activities they may not otherwise encounter.

Social Intelligence is a key focus within our PE curriculum. Physical education naturally provides opportunities for cooperation, teamwork, leadership and empathy. Children learn how to work successfully with others, communicate effectively, respect different abilities and support one another to achieve shared goals. Through healthy competition and collaborative activities, pupils develop the social skills needed to become responsible, respectful and active members of their community.

Implementation:-

At Woodvale, PE is planned as a carefully sequenced curriculum which enables pupils to progressively build knowledge, skills and understanding throughout their primary education. Through high-quality teaching, children develop competence across a broad range of sports and physical activities whilst deepening their understanding of healthy participation.

There are several features that run throughout all of our PE teaching:-

Building strong foundations

In the early years and Key Stage 1, a significant emphasis is placed upon developing fundamental movement skills, balance, coordination and agility. These provide the foundations needed for future success across all areas of physical education.

Progressive skill development

Children revisit and refine key skills throughout their time at Woodvale. Skills are developed progressively, enabling pupils to apply them with increasing confidence, accuracy and fluency across a range of sporting contexts.

Motor competence, rules and healthy participation

Our curriculum is structured around developing children's motor competence, understanding of rules, strategies and tactics, and knowledge of healthy participation. This ensures that children not only perform skills but also understand how and why they are used.

Personal development through sport

PE provides opportunities for pupils to develop important personal qualities including resilience, teamwork, leadership, respect and self-confidence. These attributes are taught and reinforced throughout lessons and wider sporting opportunities.

Broad and balanced experiences

Children participate in a wide range of activities including gymnastics, dance, games, athletics, outdoor and adventurous activities and swimming. This breadth ensures that all pupils can experience success and discover activities they enjoy.

Our curriculum is supported by a clear progression of knowledge and skills from Reception to Year 6. Opportunities for competition, leadership and participation in enrichment activities further enhance children's learning and encourage lifelong engagement in physical activity.

Impact:

We will know that the intent of our PE curriculum is successful through:-

  • our children demonstrating confidence and competence across a broad range of physical activities
  • our children applying physical skills effectively and with increasing accuracy and fluency
  • our children showing resilience, determination and positive attitudes towards challenge and competition
  • our children working collaboratively and respectfully with others
  • our children using appropriate sporting vocabulary to evaluate and improve performance
  • our children understanding the importance of physical activity, health and wellbeing
  • our children enjoying PE and developing positive attitudes towards lifelong participation in sport and physical activity
